In music, 'Sampling' refers to the reuse of a portion (or 'sample') of an audio recording in a different recording. Samples may contain elements such as rhythm, melody, speech, or sound effects. A sample may be only a fragment of audio, or it may be a longer portion of music, such as a continuous drum beat or full melody.
Under current sampling laws, artists are generally required to get permission from the copyright holder of the original recording (generally the record label) and the copyright holder of the original composition (generally songwriters or their publishers).
